What are the Types of Lung Cancer?
The two types of lung cancer to start with are Primary Lung Cancer, cancer starting in the lung, and Secondary Lung Cancer, cancer that spreads to the lungs.
The types of lung cancer that are at issue here are those of Primary Lung Cancer and this is then futher broken down to include these two main types of lung cancer: Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) and Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC).
Of the two main types, Small Cell and Non-Small Cell, Non-Small Cell is the most common, the most treatable and the slowest.
The Non-Small Cell Types of Lung Cancer
The sub-types fluctuate in size, shape and chemical make-up.
- Squamous Cell Lung Cancer, or Carcinoma - accounts for approximately 25 - 30% of all lung cancers.
- Adenocarcinoma - typically found in the outer regions of the lungs. More common in women than men.
- Large-Cell Undifferentiated Carcinoma - More rare than the first two and more aggressive.
The Small Cell Types of Lung Cancer
- Mixed Small Cell/Large Cell Carcinoma
- Combined Small Cell Carcinoma
Although the cancer cells are small, as the name implies, thet multiply quickly forming large tumors and spreading quickly to the lymph nodes and other organs, also they produce a hormon like substance which alters the body chemistry and harms organs, in addition to the cancer.
