Warning, the following emergency treatments are provided for information purposes only, always consult your doctor prior to using any alternative or complimentary methods of treatment.

The Quickest way I found to relieve gout attacks;

Take medicine your doctor prescribed for treating your gout attacks. If you don’t have prescribed medication for your gout use an over-the-counter NSAID such as Ibuprofen .

Recommended dosage for treating acute gout attacks.

Ibuprofen,(OTC), take 800 mg 4 times a day

Reduce the dosage as the attack subsides and stop as soon as possible.

See your doctor or visit a hospital as soon as possible for an injection of steroid or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), to quickly relieve the pain.

Remove clothing from the affected area and avoid any pressure on the joint.

Apply an anesthetic numbing spray, cream or lotion to the affected area, which will help to numb the pain, (such products can be purchased easily over the counter from any chemist, drug store).

Avoid using aspirin as it can make the attack far worse.

Avoid alcohol, acidic foods and drinks, fizzy drinks, orange juice, tomatoes, citrus fruit, red meat as they will all worsen and prolong gout attacks.

Consume at least 2 liters of mineral water every day.

You need to alkalize your body and increase it’s blood PH level to around 7, the quickest way I have found of doing this is by the use of ordinary baking soda (nothing special here, just the backing powder you probably already have in your kitchen cupboard). Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda to a medium, half pint sized glass of mineral or filtered water and drink every four hours (do not exceed more than four glasses in one day). Baking soda, is known to accelerate the urinary excretion of excess uric acid and will remove the build up of the uric acid crystals from around the affected joint. Baking soda, due to its acid level, increases the effectiveness of NSAIDs. Please note, due to the high sodium content of the backing soda, avoid using any other forms of salt while using baking soda due to its high sodium content. Using backing soda is not advisable for people who suffer with high blood pressure, or heart conditions.

Always get your doctor’s approval before trying this (ask your doctor in advance, just so you know it will be safe, if you do ever need to use this method).

Use ice to cool the effected joint & reduce swelling and pain.

Rest joint until gout has subsided or gone, premature use of the affected joint may prolong the attack.

Find out as much as you can about your gout condition to prevent and treat future attacks. Be prepared, gout often starts without warning. These methods are designed to tackle an acute and unbearable attack and are not the best way of treating and preventing gout in the long term.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory joint disease (Autoimmune disease) that is characterised by daily pain, stiffness and fatigue which, in turn, limits activities of daily living. Rheumatoid arthritis, a crippling disease that affects approximately 2-3% of the world’s population, and usually starts between the ages of 20-40 years and is more common in women, affecting them 3 times more often than men. Some forms of the disease can occur in children. Rheumatoid arthritis affects about 1 percent of our population and at least two million Americans have definite or classical rheumatoid arthritis. It is a much more devastating illness than previously appreciated.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic condition, which means any part of the body can be effected, including organs such as the kidneys in some cases. Rheumatoid arthritis can occur in any race or ethnic group, there are no restrictions to RA.

Medications to treat RA include prescribed and over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), disease-modifying anti rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), biological modifiers, and corticosteroids. Non-drug treatments may include adapted exercise programs, hot and cold press, water resistance therapy, and lifestyle changes, such as rest, diet, and reducing stress.

Also used are medicines that manage the immune system called Immunosuppressants, these drugs are only used when the immune system goes completely out of control.

An autoimmune diseases is the description given to a condition which causes the body’s own antibodies mistakenly attack their own body tissues (in RA the area normally attacked is the joint synovium), this causes the pain and inflammation.

The joints most commonly afflicted by rheumatoid arthritis can include the hands, wrists, ankles, elbows, hips, & knees. Arthritis varies from person to person and Rheumatoid arthritis is no exception, while some will suffer daily with the chronic condition others may experience long periods of remission with perhaps only mild infrequent attacks. Most cases of rheumatoid arthritis are however chronic conditions, which means the disease is reoccurring.

People suffering with rheumatoid arthritis should always consult with their medical professional regarding their course of medication. Medicines must be used with caution, due to the toxicity of some RA drugs. Patients should let their doctors know about any changes that may occur while using the medication. Patients should also be aware that their condition could lead to other complications, which may not be obviously apparent such as the affect RA can have on their spinal cord.

Many foods are known to help one’s RA, while many others will actually contribute to the disease or trigger the symptoms, there are far to many to list here, however one of the most important foods to cut out of your diet, would be white flower, and anything made with white flour.

Food allergy & intolerance’s may be the reason for many cases of rheumatoid arthritis.

Bad foods for arthritis tend to contain chemicals called inflammatory prostaglandins, which can be directly responsible for triggering some arthritis conditions. Rheumatoid arthritis in particular is closely linked to food allergy & intolerance’s. Most sufferers have been shown to greatly improve when they cut out certain foods or restrict their diet, which eliminates the foods to which they are allergic.

Bad foods which all Arthritics should avoid;

1.Processed foods

2.Tinned food

3.Fried food

4.White flour

5.Mayonnaise

Foods which should shown caution by anyone suffering with rheumatoid arthritis

The following foods cause much confusion amongst nutritionists and professionals alike, these foods are referred to as nightshade foods’

1.Potatoes (especially when green and sprouting)

2.Tomatoes (especially the smaller variety)

3.Peppers

4.Paprika

5.Paprika (in all forms)

Good foods for people suffering with RA

1.Brown rice (a good alternative to potatoes)

2.Pulses

3.Onions

4.Garlic cloves

5.Celery

6. Most oily fish

This is only a small list of some of the foods which have a link to RA (good or bad). Diet and natural programmes used to treat arthritis may not be quickest rout to pain relief because they first have to tackle the underlying contributing factors, this may take a few weeks, however natural practices do actually address the disease and not just the symptoms.

Natural, alternative and complimentary practices all play a part in the road to arthritis relief, and shouldn’t be discounted.
