Familiarizing Yourself with Male Menopause

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008
by Sarah Trinity

Speak of menopause and by and large the first thoughts that enter your audience’s minds are of women in the 45-55 year age range. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, men suffer from menopause just like women do, although their reasons for doing so may vary. In addition, familiarizing yourself with this condition also will help you deal with male menopause’s symptoms which differ somewhat from the condition as it is experienced by women.

The symptoms of male menopause have been reported by men as not being quite as severe as the symptoms women undergo during menopause. Andropause, the clinical name for male menopause, has been linked to the testosterone decline in men as they age. Those who go through male menopause often describe symptoms that are similar to those initially described by women going through menopause.

Hot flashes, sudden and recurring episodes of sweating, tender mammary glands, and also an unstable libido are symptoms typically related to female menopause. Andropause sufferers also experience these symptoms; however the level of severity is often varied. Doctors find those who are aware of the frequency and severity of their symptoms are often able to get successful treatment.

Unfortunately, men do not usually like to talk about andropause and, truth be told, many do not even know that this condition exists. On the other hand, some men become concerned because male menopause symptoms mimic the experience of kidney and liver disease. Sadly, even though they may be concerned about these major bodily systems, it is this very concern that may prevent them from seeking out medical help and reassurance.

Men and women around the world will admit menopause is not something pleasant to go through, as it’s very uncomfortable. Due to the uncomfortable nature of menopause, there has been a surge in herbal medicines that are said to treat hormonal changes associated with menopause. One should know however that these herbs cannot cure menopause, but only lessen bothersome symptoms.

Those interested in taking herbal supplements to help with symptoms of menopause should first talk with their doctor. The reason talking with a doctor or pharmacist is important is because many herbs can be toxic when combined with prescriptions you may already take. Their counteraction can be deadly, so talking with a doctor can help you determine which herbs are best for you in combination with drugs you’re already taking on a regular basis.

Andropause is treated by physicians with simple testosterone replacement therapy. In this aspect, the treatment mimics that of female menopause which is usually treated with hormone replacement therapy as well. Sufferers of both forms of menopause have reported that this greatly relieves the symptoms that make them most uncomfortable.

In some cases a concurrent course of treatment will involve talking therapy or counseling sessions, especially when andropause or menopause severely affect the libido. Sexual problems have been determined to be a premier reason for divorce among older couples, and seeking to avoid this issue is imperative. Additionally, in many cases men have to come to grips with a false but persistent impression of a loss of manhood.

The Secret Behind Male Menopause

Speak of menopause and by and large the first thoughts that enter your audience’s minds are of women in the 45-55 year age range. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, men suffer from menopause just like women do, although their reasons for doing so may vary. In addition, familiarizing yourself with this condition also will help you deal with male menopause’s symptoms which differ somewhat from the condition as it is experienced by women.

Men have reported that the symptoms of male menopause are less severe than those reported by women suffering from female menopause. Andropause, as the condition is clinically referred to, has been linked to an age related decline in testosterone levels. Sufferers from male menopause have likened their initial symptoms to be like those experienced by women.

Traditional symptoms of menopause include hot flashes, sudden and recurring episodes of sweating, tender mammary glands, and changes in libido. Male menopause sufferers do often experience these symptoms, with various levels of severity. Doctors have noted that patients that are most aware of the frequency and severity of symptoms often get the most useful treatment.

Most anyone will agree that menopause is a condition which is at the very least uncomfortable to deal with. This has led to the resurgence of several over the counter, herbal medicines that are said to treat the hormonal changes associated with the condition. It is noteworthy that none of these substances will actually take care of the condition so much as they will perhaps ease the symptoms.

Those interested in taking herbal supplements should certainly discuss their intended use of any herbal supplementation with their physicians. It’s vital to realize the possible dangers of mixing herbal supplements with existing prescription medications. The combinations can often lead to dangerous systemic reactions that can be life threatening and fatal. However, talking with your doctor can help you determine which herbs can be safely taken with your existing medications.

Male menopause, Andropause, can be treated by doctors with simple testosterone replacement therapy. The testosterone replacement therapy treatment is similar to hormone replacement therapy offered to women with menopause. Men and women have both reported replacement therapy relieves the symptoms of menopause.

Male menopause treatment plans can also include therapy or counseling sessions, especially when the condition affects libido. A problem with sex is the number one reason for divorce in couples over the age of 50. It can be challenging for men to feel sa if they’re losing their manhood during male menopause, however with therapy they can better understand their condition.

Menopause and Weight Gain - How To Lose Weight

Thursday, May 8th, 2008
by James Liow

A common complaint of women in the age group of 40 to 50 after their menopause is weight gain. Menopuase and weight gain seem to go hand in hand in many women. During this time maintaining present body weight becomes very tough for the woman. Interestingly most of the weight is accumulated in the abdomen and not in the thighs and hips. This creates even more problems for the woman.

Weight gain is one of the drastic changes caused by menopause that never fail to shock women. They start to think that maintaining their weight is a hopeless endeavor because despite exercise and a balanced diet, they still gain extra pounds each day.

Women must realize that it is a natural phenomenon. The extra weight gained comes from the change of hormonal levels of their body. These hormones that are likely to be affected are progesterone, estrogen, androgen, and testosterone.

Also, change in lifestyle is another reason for weight gain. Menopausal women often reduce the amount of exercise they do in comparison to their younger life and thus it leads to accumulation of fats in the body.

Women also tend to eat more in this age but the calorie requirements of the body gets decreased as a person gets older. The result thus is weight gain. Further, it is also believed that genetic factors also play a huge role in increasing weight in women after menopause.

Now the more important question is what should a woman do after menopause so that she does not gain much weight? The answer to this is very simple and indeed a regular weight loss methodology. However the only difference is that now you need to be more disciplined as well as careful about your health. Following are some of the age old but sure solutions to lose weight both after and during menopause.

Have a healthy and balanced diet. Drink lots of water and avoid sugars and junk food.

Say no to crash diets. It is a lie when people say crash diets will help in losing weight. It will not help you lose weight; instead it will just cause more harm.

Medical experts say losing weight in a short amount of time can lead to osteoporosis. Weight loss does not happen overnight. It is a gradual process.

Avoid food and drinks that are not good for your body like sugar, junk foods, and those containing alcohol, nicotine and caffeine.

Regular exercise is also a better solution to your weight problem. You should try aerobics because it will burn excessive fats and will also increase your metabolism. You can also do weight bearing activities to successfully manage your weight. You can walk, run or swim or ride the bicycle but you should do it on a regular basis.
