The Truth About Hair Loss: Products for Hair Loss
Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008It is normal to shed hair every day and the truth is we loose between 100-125 hairs on any given day. Hair that is shed falls out at the end of growth cycle. At any given time 10% of our hair is in what is called a “resting phase” and after 2-3 months resting, hair falls out and new hair grows in its place. Some people, however, experience more hair loss than is normal.
As we get older both women and men experience an increase in hair loss; it is a normal port of the aging process. The clinical name for this phenomenon is ‘Androgenic Alopecia’, and it accounts for more than 95% of all hair loss in individuals. Androgenic Alopecia affects some people more than others, and is more pronounced in some families. It is so common that in men it is often referred to as Male Pattern Baldness (MPB).
Characteristic signs of Androgenic Alopecia are a receding hairline and / or baldness on the top of the head in men. In women, hair loss is more uniformly distributed and presents itself as noticeable thinning over the entire scalp.
Hormones are a large determinant of the time of onset and severity of Androgenic Alopecia. Testosterone can be found in both men and women, and some of the testosterone is converted to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in both genders. DHT has the effect of shrinking hair follicles and thickening of scalp tissue. As the scalp becomes less elastic and thicker, blood flow is restricted and hair follicles begin to atrophy. As a result, when hair is lost, less hair re-emerges to replace it. Since men produce more testosterone in their bodies than women, they generally experience more hair loss over time than women do.
While Androgenic Alopecia is the number one reason why individuals experience hair loss, it is not the only one. Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, ringworm and fungal infections can cause hair loss. Certain medications such as blood thinners, gout medication, birth control pills and too much vitamin A can cause sudden or abnormal hair loss as can following a crash diet, sudden hormonal changes, chemotherapy and radiation.
Pregnancy, surgery and stress are also implicated in hair loss. In cases where these types of physical or mental stress are involved the resulting hair loss usually occurs three to four months following the stress. This is because when the stress occurs an abnormal number of hair follicles enter the resting or dormant phase; when it terminates these hairs fall out and there is a gap in time until new hair replaces them. If the stress is continuous, the gap grows longer.
Placing undue manipulative stress on the hair itself can cause hair loss as well. Excessive brushing or combing, tight curlers or tight pigtails can irritate the scalp and eventually scar it causing permanent hair loss. Aggressive hair treatments such as multiple permanents or hot oil treatments can do the same thing.
Of all of the base causes of hair loss listed above, Androgenic Alopecia accounts for the vast majority of early onset hair loss cases. Fortunately it is often the most treatable cause. Treatment programs such as Provillus suppress the production of DHT in the body while also providing the nutrients necessary for healthy hair growth. Consequently hair regrowth usually results from consistent use over a period of several months. If you are one of the millions of men or women faced with premature hair loss you can avert the embarrassment and heartache that comes with hair loss by using a product like Provillus to preserve and care for your hair.
