Are There Effects Between Stress and Cardiovascular Disease?
Stress and cardiovascular disease are related in that:
- Blood clots may form during times of stress
- The nervous system releases extra hormones that raise blood pressure and increases the heart rate
- An increased heart rate brings a need for oxygen, prompting the heart to work harder, potentially bringing chest pain
An increasing amount of research shows that there is a relationship between the risk of cardiovascular disease and stress factors.
These factors include job strain (your boss, fellow employees and the work environment), family issues (relationships with parents, spouse, kids), personality traits (are you a type A personalities?) and a persons overall psychological outlook (how do you handle uncontrolable events vs. controlable events.
For instance a Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions study posted: April 22, 2002, stated that
Angry Young Men Prone To Premature Heart Disease; Heart Attack Risk Five Times Higher
Still, more research is needed, of course, as it isn't clear if 'the 'stress' factors' are independant risk or if stress contributes to the other causes of heart disease .
