Primary Hypertension

Primary Hypertension - Unexplained Hypertension

There a two types of hypertension, ' primary hypertension ' (95% of hypertension is primary) and ' secondary hypertension '.

Primary hypertension (also referred to as 'essential hypertension') has multiple risk factors predispose persons to hypertension.

Approximately 30% of the cause of primary hypertension is genetic factors. For example a person is two times as likely to have hypertension if one, or both, parents had it.

The majority of persons having primary hypertension have a greater stiffness and increased resistance to blood flow in the arteries which are furthest away from the heart (aka peripheral arteries).

Although the exact cause of primary hypertension is unknown, both genetic and environmental factors play a role. Lifestyle is such as the normal aging process, diet and lack of the proper nutrients, lack of exercise, a sedentary lifestyle, consuming too much salt and consuming too much alcohol.

Treating primary hypertension can, for many, simply be an alteration of lifestyle:

Watching your weight - being over weight is a factor in hypertension, especially as one ages. Proper diet and weight loss may aid in reversing the associated problems.

Get More Exercise - regular 'aerobic' exercise (walking, swimming, running, cycling, etc.) can be very beneficial in decreasing blood pressure, as well as helping with your weight, even stress levels and cholesterol levels.

Reduce Salt intake - don't add salt to anything you cook or eat. If you can't stay away from salt get a salt substitute.

Lower Alcohol Consumption - Excessive drinkers are two times more likely to suffer high blood pressure and strokes.

The import thing, especially as you age, is to see your doctor regularly and have your blood pressure checked often.

Monitors are in almost every pharmacy these days and with technologies being as great as they are, the price of a quality monitor for the home is very affordable, often under $100.
