Concerned About The Possibility of Acid Reflux in Infants?
Acid reflux never a good experience for anyone. But did you ever stop to think how excruciating it must be with acid reflux in infants.
Infant acid reflux, or GERD, is painful for anyone who suffers from it, be they infants or 70 years of age. It's painful to the infant, and equally painful for the parents of the infant.
Acid reflux in infants, or even indigestion, also known as colic, is misunderstood by most people. Colic has been thought of simply as crying or “fussiness”. There is no single definition for colic, however we do know that the infant is in extreme discomfort, and that the discomfort is very much linked to his/her digestive process.
Colic usually begins when a baby is six weeks old and lasts until he/she is about three or four months. Only a minority of colic cases go beyond six months.
Millions of mothers will attest to the fact that they would gladly take on their baby's sickness, if it meant relief for their beloved offspring.
* What are the Symptoms of Acid Reflux in Infants? *
Colic is generally characterized by crying.
Lots of it!
In fact, the crying is inconsolable. A mother may exhaust all means to get the child to calm down, however because of the pain, won't stop.
As the parent of a colicky baby you may already know that the crying comes on suddenly from spasmodic abdominal cramping and your baby will automatically draw up his/her knees, clench his/her fists, and turn red in the face.
As your babies body tenses up it is easy to see that the child is in agony. The crying is not a "normal" cry as if they are hungry, the cry is a high-pitch scream – a definite sign that something is wrong. As the baby cries, he/she begins to suck in more air, which builds up gas in the stomach and makes things worse.
Acid reflux in infants most often strikes during the late afternoon, and into the evening ans may last for hours.
Most parents notice that the problem strikes at regular time periods – for example, an infant may become colicky at 5 pm each day. This little piece of information should help you prepare for what may be an emotional ordeal.
* What are the causes? *
Some doctors believe that colic is an of allergic reaction and most agree that it is at least partly the result of the child's dietary habits.
Being overfed or underfed is part of the reason for acid reflux to strike and infants who are fed too much fat, sugar, or protein.
Breast fed infants tend to have a lower risk than do bottle fed babies and this is likely the result of most formulas having a lot of sugar and juices that are also put into bottles may not be 100% juice, and even when they are you will want to add water, up to 50% , to dilute the natural sugar.
Just as it is with adults, stress may play a role in acid reflux in infants. Parents to provide an environment that is free from anything that may create uneasiness, or nervousness, in their baby. Infants seem to pick up on the feelings of those around them and the atmosphere in general, and it upsets his/her stomach.
Many children will have digestive problems throughout their lives, some starting as early as birth, but others starting when they are toddlers or young children.
When your child is young however, you might have to really look at their behavior to notice if they are suffering from indigestion or not.
The problem can seem even bigger if the child is not able to tell you what is wrong with them in their own words. Look out for changes in behavior and complaints after eating and when you put the child down for a nap.
Then choose whether or not you want to discuss these things with your child's doctor.
Your child may be old enough to verbally tell you what's wrong. In fact, they may describe things a little differently than you would expect. Some children will automatically say their heart hurts when in fact they are having gas pains in their chest.
While an adult would be able to differentiate between their heart being in pain and gas pains, a child would not be able to verbalize these differences.
If you start noticing your child is having more gas than usual, he or she might be suffering from indigestion or acid reflux as well.
Also your child might tell you they have a stomache ache and might not be able to tell you much more than that.
